Thanks for taking action with Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice (LSURJ)!

This action should be easy but very impactful: ask your school principal a few questions about how they’re prepping their school community for the Trump Administration’s new immigration policies.

As you may know, in 2017, LSURJ and a multi-racial coalition of stakeholders pushed the JCPS board to declare JCPS a Safe Haven School District.

Since the election in November, LSURJ and others have pushed and supported the board and Superintendent to recommit to this declaration and to take steps to protect all of our students. Check out the JCPS Immigration Resources webpage for:
  • JCPS’ Safe Haven Declaration
  • A Family Safety Plan
  • Frequently Asked Questions about how schools must respond if they are asked about student information by ICE or what to do if ice shows up on school property

While these policies are great, we’ve heard varying stories about if and how that info has been given to each school’s teachers and families. This is where you come in!

Have a direct conversation with your principal in JCPS, asking a few questions about what they’ve done to prepare for what’s happening, such as:

  1. Are you familiar with the JCPS Immigration Resources page and protocols provided by the District on how to prepare for and respond to ICE activity at our school?
  2. How have you shared this info with the teachers at your school?  Have they received a Know Your Rights Training?  If not, would you like someone to provide that for you?
  3. How have you communicated this information to your student families?  If you haven’t, can you commit to sharing the information on the JCPS Immigration Resources webpage in their primary language?

That’s it! Then fill out this Google Form  to record who you talked to and what they said. If they would like more information or support, get their contact info and we will follow up.

If someone has already talked to your principal(s), that’s great!  The more they get asked, the more they will know that this is an important issue to their community.

What about private schools, or schools outside of JCPS?

You can and should still talk to your administration about this issue. You can check the ACLU’s page for guidance about Federal guidelines , and also check to see if your school or district has protections in place.

Thank you for showing up in support of our immigrant neighbors!
